Edit Decision List - Shenay

Edit Decision Sheet

Thursday, 4 December 2014

Update/Reflection

When creating a story board we found it difficult to put out sequences in order and decide how long clips would last, therefore to over come this we decided to create two storyboards. The first one was basic as we wanted to just get our ideas down on paper and see what i looked like. We then created a second story board  and this time looked at what things worked in our last storyboard and what things didn't, this meant we were being more critical and specific with our documentary which allowed us to add more information such as the duration of the clips and be able to put narration in it also, so that it would make more sense. After creating our storyboards we have have a much more clear idea of what we want our documentary to look like and the structure it will follow,  and this is going to help us in the editing process.

Voiceover Script - Shenay

Voiceover Script

Storyboard 2 - Shenay

This is our second draft of our storyboard, we believe this story boards is much more clearer than our previous one as we have included, the clip duration and various shot types used with parts of the narration. This will be visually aiding when creating our documentary as there is a clear and consistent structure to follow which will allow us to edit our documentary much faster and efficiently as we have a clear idea of where we are leading to, and what scenes to use and when.

Storyboard 1 - Shenay

This is our first draft of our storyboard. Creating a storyboard was useful as we were able to put our ideas on paper and see how our documentary would pan out. This meant that we were able to see whether certain footage could be used with one another or not. After putting it all on paper and deciding what order the scenes go in we then decided to create a second storyboard which was in much more detail, which we believed would make our thoughts and ideas much more clearer.

Update/Reflection

This week we have been filming in various locations, for example we got the equipment into the car and drove to Graces' house in order to get some home footage. Here we faced difficulty in time management as we needed to film article footage and Vox pops, however we had to do this in a short amount of time. In order to make sure we were on schedule we set a certain amount of time to film each scene. We also got the chance to experiment with different shot types such as an extremely high over the shoulder shot. We believe this shot was useful as showing the use of social media at home reinforces the idea of obsessions; which is a point we want to make in our documentary.

We have also been playing with different shots in the class room, we started using books as props. We faced difficulty when filming a low angle shot, as we couldn't get grace into the shot, to overcome this problem, we used books from around the class room to put under the camera in order to give it some height. We then got the perfect shot.

Update/ Reflection

In our first week of filming we have played with different shot types. For example we have tried hand held shots, Arial shots. We had difficulty in shooting fill in footage outside as we wanted to do a pan shot while zooming out from the Solihull sixth form sign, however we soon discovered a technique after perseverance and got a few good takes which we can edit. We have also filmed our first expert interview which went well, however we discovered that when we looked back at the footage the framing of the shot was slightly low, therefore we will take this into account when doing our other interviews in order to make sure we don't make the same mistake again.

Setting up equipment safely - Shenay

Setting Up Equipment

The equipment - Shenay

We first got introduced to our equipment, such as the tripod, base plate and camera, and watched as Richard showed us how to set them up

Now that we are familiar with the equipment, it will make recording our documentary a lot easier as we now know how to function the camera correctly and set up the tripod, so this will make us more time efficient when recording.

Arranging Interviews - Shenay

Thursday, 9 October 2014

Update/Reflection :

Now that we have completed our proposal we have a clear idea of the type of documentary we are going to create. We also have a greater knowledge on our Tv channel showing, which ask means we have a greater insight into our target audience. We now know that we will be following an open structure and following the theory of binary opposites.
We did have difficulty in deciding our Tv channel , however we over came this by doing research into many different Tv channels and looking into their demographics and the types of shows they have. We then compared this to our target audience and carried out research using our questionnaire to decide whether they would watch this Tv channel and what types of documentaries they would watch.

In order to stay organised we set ourselves objectives to complete in that lesson, to make sure we were being productive.

we ended up completing the tasks set, and decided that next time we were going to work on the risk assessment and plan of filming

Update/Reflection

This week we have all been carrying out our own Research:

Codes and Conventions Of Interviews - Shenay

Examples of camera shots to use during an Interview:
Over the shoulder shot- this will feature the person who is asking the question as well as the interviewee. You would use this shot if the person asking the questions is also featured in the documentary, and you will always take into account the mise en scene such as costume and props

The Single Camera Interview: Tips And Technique's How do you shoot a ...

Medium close up  - is conventionally used when doing both vox pop and expert interviews, especially when the person is sitting down, this is when framing also comes into account as the person can be positioned left of the frame or right

Shots to use during narration:
Establishing shot-  sets up, or establishes the context for a scene, this will be used in order to set the scene during the narration.

Cut away - is often used throughout an interview. It's used to show a specific thing relating to the narration, in order to give it a visual meaning and make it more interesting to the audience.

Questionnaire review- Grace

The main significant results gathered from the questionnaire were from questions 5, 6 and 7.

In question 5 the results provided us with information to base our decision on what channel the documentary should be on by asking the question ‘Which out of these TV channels do you watch most often?’ This gave us an idea of what channels are watched most by the target audience. The results revealed that 32% of the results showed watching BBC3 the most and 27% for both BBC1 and Channel 4. This helped as BBC3 was our desired channel for the documentary so it proved to be a good choice of channel.

Question 6 asked ‘What day do you spend watching TV the most?’ the results from this question gave a clearer idea of when would be the best day to put the documentary on TV to gain the maximum number of viewers. The results showed that Wednesday would be the day that the people in the target audience would be most likely to be watching TV.

Question 7 will help us decide what time to put the documentary on at. The results from the question; ‘At what time are you most likely to watch TV?’ provided times that would be the right time to air the documentary. The results showed that 6pm and 7pm are the most popular times for people to be watching TV so this will influence our final decision.

However for all of the questions asked we will have to consider other factors that may be involved to make the appropriate choices and decisions involved for our documentary but the results gathered will provide guidelines to help influence decisions.

The questionnaire was carried out in order to gather information on the target audience and get an idea of their thoughts and opinions of documentaries and the viewing times which will help us in the planning of the documentary overall, therefore all results gathered will be considered and interpreted to influence all decisions involved in the planning and making of the documentary.

Questionnaire results Bar charts- Grace

Questionnaire results pie charts- Grace

Questionnaire results table- Grace

Questionnaire - Grace

Quantitative questions were used in the questionnaire in order to get results that can be easily generalised so the results can be looked at quickly and clearly in tables and charts to help make decisions on the data we have. The age and gender are asked in order to differentiate for the target audience.
. The results we gather from the questionnaires will help us to decide important elements in the planning of our documentary.

Update/Reflection:

After doing research into our topic of social media we have highlighted areas that are of use to us . By doing this it has made it easier  for us to extract relevant information and use this in order to benefit our documentary.  For example, we now have a clearer idea of the topics we can discuss in our documentary and have useful facts and statistics which we can also include in our script. Researching into recent news articles will back up our points and add realism to our documentary.

Shenay- I have also created a mood board which is something i hadn't done before, and found the process of finding useful photos interesting as each photo had to say something new about what we are going to include in our documentary.I believe the mood board is useful as it will remind us of key points to include in our documentary and the ideas we want to put across.

Mood board - Shenay

This is our mood board, it shows pictures of social media networks and the different types of platforms its available on. there are pictures of people who look upset/worried as well as images which show more of a positive side of social media networks such as Instagram. There are also pictures of students as our documentary will focus on how social media effects our generation.

Initial ideas discussion

Our initial ideas discussion was a very useful tool when planning  for our documentary. We were able to discuss all our different ideas and discuss the pros and cons of filming and using different footage, while doing this we improved our communication and team working skills as we were able to compromise and discuss our ideas freely. Now that we have done this we have a clearer idea of the types of shots and footage we need to film, and have gotten an idea of the structure of our documentary which will be useful when filming our footage.

Location Recce - Adrianne

Location Scouting: Inside Solihull Sixth Form CollegeBefore we start filming we will need to investigate which possible areas of the campus are appropriate location for me to film. The locations must fulfill the following criterias:

  • Well Lit - the area I will be filming in needs to be well lit, because bright locations have connotations of happiness and serenity.
  • Easily recognised as a location in a college/school - the area needs to have necessary props already presents such as chairs and tables.
  • Availability/clear for filming - obviously consideration will be needed to be taken in account if the rooms are empty with no one present for a minimum of 30mins to properly set up. It needs to unfortunately clear of people apart from the cast as the other people can't be controlled.

Below are some photographs of location inside the college campus that I have considered to use as a location for the various scenes in our documentary.

Canteen -
A free student area available to anyone at college during college hours. However can get very busy during lunch breaks and there can be a lot of noise. We can get around this problem because our shots need to be filmed at  quieter times when only a few people are there, therefore it will always be accessible for us when required.
We think this location will be good for vox-pops as it is a natural environment for teenagers and it is known to be a place were they spend their free time so we can see what they get up too. most of the time we seeing many people on their phones on Facebook, Instragram ect.

Internet Café -
Once again the internet café at college is free for anyone to use and at anytime during college hours. the only problem we found was that it can get very busy and we tend to find groups of people sitting around 1 computer making it hard to find space. We can over come this becoming at quitter times or asking people to split up a bit when filming. We think this location will be good as there are computers in the background and tables showing us hat students can be sat on computers or tables and still be accessing social media websites.

Hampton -
This is the entrance of Hampton building for students to walk in and out. The only problem we might see with this is it will get crowded and busy as students are walking to lessons. however as we will be filming during lessons and frees it won't be much of a problem. Another problem might be the weather, as we start filming it will be getting colder and wetter as it is becoming winter. To over come this problem we will film outside on days where it is warmer and not raining. This location is good as it sets the sense and shows the viewer we are in a college for student. This shows them that our documentary is about the younger generation.

Corridor -
In the corridor of Hampton building we thought that this would be a good place to shoot vox-pops; however, after thinking about it we decided that it might not be the best place as it gets very busy as it right opposite the main Hampton door. Also, as there is a framed picture on the wall we might have trouble with the cameras reflection when shooting.

 Classroom -
The media room has an advantage of being setup symmetrically, which could be very pleasing to look at, it has plenty of posters about the course which you normally attribute to class rooms and other items too. The only downside to this location is that this room is not available during lesson time as it is used for lesson in. It is far too packed with other students which I might found difficult to control environment.

Head of Years Office -
This location can be available to film in, I have asked the head of year and he has said he is happy to be filmed in it.  I have chosen this location for the scene as it shows he is a head teacher of a college. It is well lit, which is great. Inside there is a desk and computer and several stacks of papers, this should be very helpful as those are the type of props that are needed to show that this is an office.

1. Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects)?
The potential hazard that I might encounter where the photo shoot will partake are moving vehicles for example a parking lot

2. What will you do to ensure these risks are minimised?

I will make sure the and the filming photo shoot and filming is only done when the area is not busy.

3. Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this?

I have decided that my photo shoot  and filming shall partake during midday, whilst it is sunny to get the maximum natural lighting possible.

4. Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want?

I have considered a brick wall background for my photoshoot and filming , I will ensure that I get the brick wall background by doing a photoshoot where there is a brick wall in a not busy area.

5. Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects that might spoil the effect?

I have not considered lighting as they will take too long to prepare, the problem with natural lighting that I might encounter is that on the day of the photo shoot it might not be sunny or not enough. If this ever happens I might have to resort to using the built in flash of the camera that I will be using. I also have considered reflective objects, but this is not a problem as they can be edited out.

6. Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind?

I do not need permission to take photos and film in the venues I have in mind as it is a public area and it also mainly free to roam.

7. Do you need to book time in a room (eg the photography studio)?

No I will not be using a photography studio

8. Are other people/crowds likely to be an issue for you? What have you done to ensure that it will not spoil the effect?

No, people/crowds will not be a problem for my photoshoot and filming as they can be edited out with photoshop and video editor.

Task 3 -Research into Social media - Shenay

Update/Reflection

This week we have worked on our communication skills and organising our ideas. We have worked together in order to brainstorm different ideas for our documentary. We had difficulty in deciding what topic to choose, so we decided to pick our best tree ideas and look at the pros and cons of each, we then looked at which topic we felt more confident with and all of this analysis allowed us to choose our final topic.
We will now have to do further research into our topic in order to gain enough knowledge and feel confident while making our documentary.
