Location Recce - Adrianne
Location Scouting: Inside Solihull Sixth Form CollegeBefore we start filming we will need to investigate which possible areas of the campus are appropriate location for me to film. The locations must fulfill the following criterias:
- Well Lit - the area I will be filming in needs to be well lit, because bright locations have connotations of happiness and serenity.
- Easily recognised as a location in a college/school - the area needs to have necessary props already presents such as chairs and tables.
- Availability/clear for filming - obviously consideration will be needed to be taken in account if the rooms are empty with no one present for a minimum of 30mins to properly set up. It needs to unfortunately clear of people apart from the cast as the other people can't be controlled.
Below are some photographs of location inside the college campus that I have considered to use as a location for the various scenes in our documentary.
A free student area available to anyone at college during college hours. However can get very busy during lunch breaks and there can be a lot of noise. We can get around this problem because our shots need to be filmed at quieter times when only a few people are there, therefore it will always be accessible for us when required.
We think this location will be good for vox-pops as it is a natural environment for teenagers and it is known to be a place were they spend their free time so we can see what they get up too. most of the time we seeing many people on their phones on Facebook, Instragram ect.
Internet Café -
Once again the internet café at college is free for anyone to use and at anytime during college hours. the only problem we found was that it can get very busy and we tend to find groups of people sitting around 1 computer making it hard to find space. We can over come this becoming at quitter times or asking people to split up a bit when filming. We think this location will be good as there are computers in the background and tables showing us hat students can be sat on computers or tables and still be accessing social media websites.
Hampton -
This is the entrance of Hampton building for students to walk in and out. The only problem we might see with this is it will get crowded and busy as students are walking to lessons. however as we will be filming during lessons and frees it won't be much of a problem. Another problem might be the weather, as we start filming it will be getting colder and wetter as it is becoming winter. To over come this problem we will film outside on days where it is warmer and not raining. This location is good as it sets the sense and shows the viewer we are in a college for student. This shows them that our documentary is about the younger generation.
In the corridor of Hampton building we thought that this would be a good place to shoot vox-pops; however, after thinking about it we decided that it might not be the best place as it gets very busy as it right opposite the main Hampton door. Also, as there is a framed picture on the wall we might have trouble with the cameras reflection when shooting.
Classroom -
The media room has an advantage of being setup symmetrically, which could be very pleasing to look at, it has plenty of posters about the course which you normally attribute to class rooms and other items too. The only downside to this location is that this room is not available during lesson time as it is used for lesson in. It is far too packed with other students which I might found difficult to control environment.
Head of Years Office -
This location can be available to film in, I have asked the head of year and he has said he is happy to be filmed in it. I have chosen this location for the scene as it shows he is a head teacher of a college. It is well lit, which is great. Inside there is a desk and computer and several stacks of papers, this should be very helpful as those are the type of props that are needed to show that this is an office.
1. Are there any potential hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place (trailing cables/traffic/other objects)?
The potential hazard that I might encounter where the photo shoot will partake are moving vehicles for example a parking lot
2. What will you do to ensure these risks are minimised?
I will make sure the and the filming photo shoot and filming is only done when the area is not busy.
3. Will the time of day/weather affect the outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this?
I have decided that my photo shoot and filming shall partake during midday, whilst it is sunny to get the maximum natural lighting possible.
4. Have you considered the background to your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get the background you want?
I have considered a brick wall background for my photoshoot and filming , I will ensure that I get the brick wall background by doing a photoshoot where there is a brick wall in a not busy area.
5. Have you considered lighting? What about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects that might spoil the effect?
I have not considered lighting as they will take too long to prepare, the problem with natural lighting that I might encounter is that on the day of the photo shoot it might not be sunny or not enough. If this ever happens I might have to resort to using the built in flash of the camera that I will be using. I also have considered reflective objects, but this is not a problem as they can be edited out.
6. Do you need permission to take photos in the place/venue you have in mind?
I do not need permission to take photos and film in the venues I have in mind as it is a public area and it also mainly free to roam.
7. Do you need to book time in a room (eg the photography studio)?
No I will not be using a photography studio
8. Are other people/crowds likely to be an issue for you? What have you done to ensure that it will not spoil the effect?
No, people/crowds will not be a problem for my photoshoot and filming as they can be edited out with photoshop and video editor.
